If you are reading this blog, you are probably a big fan of the 340B program, and can witness day after day the benefit it brings to your covered entity and your patients. As we travel the country, our team sees the enormous benefit it brings every day. If you are like me, you often lie in bed at night and wonder, “what can I do to support the 340B program?” Here is your chance!
Currently, at least 15 legislative bills are in discussion regarding 340B. They range from increasing the DSH percentage to re-defining the patient definition. While so many negative bills have been discussed lately, it is nice to finally see legislation in support of the 340B program!
Last month, Congresswomen Doris Matsui (D-CA) introduced new legislation in support of the 340B program. Matsui’s bill, Stretching Entity Resources for Vulnerable (SERV) Communities Act (HR6701), is legislation that clarifies the intent of the 340B Program, enhances program integrity, and protects and expands the program to meet the needs of the opioid crisis.
Here is a summary of the legislation.
So, how do we go about getting this bill passed (am I the only one who immediately thought of the Schoolhouse Rock cartoon of how a bill gets through Congress and becomes law)? For the younger generation, here you go!
How do I find my House Representative? Click here and find your House Representative.
OK, I found my Representative, now what? If possible, setup a face to face meeting with your representative. If you can’t meet in person then call, mail, email, or tweet your support of the 340B program! Tell them stories, tell them the benefits, tell them of the programs that have been created or funded from the program.
Let’s all do our part and keep the program alive and well for another 25 years!
